NIC 10th Anniversary

Our Story

Singapore is a place where people from different backgrounds and cultures come together. To ensure our continued success as a nation, it is important to remain open and stay cohesive.

In April 2009, the National Integration Council (NIC) was formed to coordinate and drive integration efforts to bring about greater interaction and mutual understanding between Singaporeans and foreigners through partnership of the people, private, and public sectors. In the past decade, individuals and organisations from the community, schools, workplaces, and media have stepped forward to do their part.

The theme for NIC 10th anniversary is “Together inSG”, which reflects the importance of coming together across communities to grow our common spaces. In line with the theme, we hope that integration efforts can continue to be grounded in the key principles of inclusiveness and involvement, where everyone, regardless of where they come from, can step up and make a positive impact in our daily lives and experiences.

Integration will take time. As the NIC celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2019, ten years is still the beginning of a continual process. We would like to thank our partners and everyone who has contributed to the integration efforts, and we hope to encourage more to join us in building a cohesive Singapore together.

How you can be a part of the celebrations

Start a project

There are many ways you or your organisation can contribute to integration and bringing people in Singapore together. Here are some examples of projects you can organise:

An inclusive event with people of various nationalities and races celebrating local culture, and developing deeper mutual understanding.
A community project where locals and foreigners volunteer together for a social cause
An exhibition or video highlighting how locals and foreigners are actively involved in the community and work together to make Singapore an even better place to live.

Share your story

If you have a story on:

Friendships between people from different nationalities and cultures
How someone has helped newcomers settle into Singapore/li>
How foreigners and immigrants have contributed to the local community
How Singaporeans have been enriched by having friends and colleagues from different cultures and backgrounds

You can share it with us at nic_secretariat@mccy.gov.sg or Sunny Side SG and we will look into how we can showcase your story to inspire others.

Share your network

We are looking for partners to collaborate with or match with other stakeholders. If your organisation has resources you would like to offer for encouraging integration, we would be happy to link up. Examples of resources may include volunteers, professional or cross-cultural expertise, performing arts or culinary talents, and other ongoing programmes by your organisation.

How we can support you

Funding

Your organisation can tap on the Community Integration Fund (CIF) to organise ground-up integration projects that create opportunities for locals and foreigners to interact and better understand each other, as well as help newcomers better adapt to Singapore society, norms and values. The CIF can co-fund up to 80% of qualifying costs, especially for new and innovative ways to encourage integration.

Singapore has always been an open and diverse society. Our multicultural, multiracial society is our strength, and a core aspect of how we define ourselves as Singaporeans.
Being open is critical for Singapore’s success and creating good opportunities for Singaporeans. Embracing diversity broadens our experience and perspectives, and help us sustain our competitiveness.
With the active involvement of many partners in integration such as yourselves, our efforts to strengthen our social cohesion and build trust will make a positive impact.
Integration is a two-way process. As Singaporeans reach out to foreigners to help them adapt to our local culture, norms and values, foreigners should make an effort to embrace our way of life and get involved in the local community.
No effort is too small. In your daily lives, you can help newcomers in your community, school or workplace learn about our local way of life. Organisations can apply for the Community Integration Fund (CIF) and organise projects that create opportunities for locals and foreigners to interact and better understand each other.
Integration takes time. The NIC’s 10^th anniversary is just the beginning of a continual process. Our efforts will bear fruit over time, if we show determination, patience and perseverance.
